Texas court permit divorcing couples to proceed without attorneys. Texas judges are not permitted to give legal advice to “pro se” litigants who appear in their courts. All court files are maintained and supervised by the District Clerk’s office of the county in which the divorce is filed. Any document that is signed and filed with the court is subject to the laws of the court, and falsifying such a document is a criminal offense. Any violent activity within the family should be reported to the local law enforcement. Texas law requires any person who has knowledge of the abuse or neglect of a child to report such activity to the child abuse hot line at 1-800-252-5400. The Texas agency overseeing children is called the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. Texas Lawyers are governed by the State Bar of Texas, which can be reached at 1-800-504-7030.
